KERSHAW, SC
The town of Kershaw did not come into existence until 1887. That year the Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago Railway (popularly know as the 3C's) made a deal to locate a depot on some cut-over timber land.The town was named for a Civil War General, Joseph B. Kershaw The first building in town was the railroad depot which served not only lumber, turpentine and farming trade but also the nearby Haile Gold Mine, the largest gold mine in the eastern United States. By 1900 there were 1,500 inhabitants, 27 stores, 2 banks, 5 churches, a large planing mill and numerous shops. In 1913, With a capital of $200,000 of which 150,000 was provided by Kreshaw investors. Kershaw's first cotton mill was completed and employed around 800 people. 2005- the cotton mill is gone, likewise the Haile Gold Mine. Population 1,600 with 4 banks and less than 27 stores, Kershaw is on the move again with street work and other project Thanks to the Town Council members and Town Administrator You want fine a better place in South Carolina to live.
